I was in the ninth grade when I decided to pursue a career in medicine. Little did I know that would start medical school online in the middle of a global pandemic. Throughout undergrad, I found online courses to be more challenging than those that were in-person. I was hesitant to experience such a pivotal moment in my life via Zoom. After my first semester, I can say it was not that bad! Patience is important. We are all figuring out virtual learning at the same time. There were a few hiccups, but the content I learned seemed no different to an in-person experience. All my friends in other schools were online too so we are all in the same boat.
Online courses allowed me to focus on my education without wasting time commuting to school or running around all over campus to get to class. However, it does have some drawbacks. It forces the student to become self-disciplined and organized. I purchased an undated weekly planner and colorful pens. I would write down everything I had to do for the week ahead of time. Organization is not just about schoolwork. A great study space is necessary for success. Invest in a comfy chair and a nice desk! I think it is important to invest in your space. This space should be quiet and comfortable.
Overall, I really enjoyed medical school online. I was concerned about missing out on laboratory experiences. However, I have realized that the practice will come in clinical years. Right now, I should be focused on successfully completing coursework. I am worried about changing my schedule for an in-person transition, but I am eager to stand up to the challenge. After all, the medical field does not run on a cookie cutter schedule!
